If we pursue the calculation to 10,000 B.C., when mankind had emerged from the Ice ages, and the population of the whole world was about 4 million, the number of ancestors that each of us had alive then was 10 to the power 30, a number so large that it is the cube of the total number of people that ever lived. I cannot but help believing that despite geographical isolation, racial and religous differences, and because of inevitable intermarriage and considering the long-time view, that we are all related, many times over. It seems inescapable - and to me very comforting - to believe that we are all kinfolk, whelped from a common litter. See the complete Quote Stommel, H. M., 1995 |

Most of the info on the Barr-Kumars's was provided by Vimala Edwards. Copies of old photographs and scans of the books were from Blossom Navaratnam.
Let me know of any gross errors, changes or additions to be made. Read the caveat above on placing too much emphasis on heritage. In this day and age, for those who have been looking at their stock offering for reassurance, the disclaimer, "Past performance is no guarantee of future results", is very applicable here as well. | ||||

Genealogy does not exist in a vaccum or isolation. There are cultural sociological factors as well as family expectations (maybe these are what are called genes) competing to bring about trends and direction on how people individually or collectively (family or bigger groups) adapt to to an ever changing landscape of social and political change. A list of references that are probably a must to understand the Ceylon/Sri Lankan cultural sociological context.
